In the year 2018, one thing that grabbed a lot of attention was a campaign that took the industry by a storm. In the last quarter of 2018, a new hashtag(#) has spread like a wildfire on social media which is still burning. Yes, I am talking about #Metoo i.e. Me Too. This has now become a movement in our Bollywood industry. But What is it all about? Where does it come from? Who are all the persons in this movement?. Lot of questions are to be answered.
Me Too, the beginning.
Let us start this with the first time #Metoo was used. Back in the year 2006, the word ‘Me too’was first used by an American social activist and community organizer, Tarana Burke against Harvey Weinstein, an American former film producer, putting an allegation of sexual harassment on him. #Metoo is a movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault. Used in 2006, this phrase was popularised by an American actress Alyssa Milano on Twitter in 2017.
Me Too in India.
Coming to India, the Me Too movement can be seen as either a campaign against sexual harassment by men in the workplace or just an effect of American “Me Too” social movement. It was gaining popularity in India with the increasing popularity of international movement but taken a sharp rise in Bollywood in October 2018, when actress Tanushree Dutta accused Nana Patekar of inappropriate behavior on the sets of a film they were shooting in the year 2008. Not only Film Industry, news media, and even the Government sector were affected by the allegations by women sharing their experiences against the sexual harassment by men in their workplace. More than 30 women have made allegations including Amyra Dastur, Tanushree Dutta, Pooja Mishra, Sona Mohapatra, and Kangana Ranaut.
Impact of Me Too.
This me too movement has had an adverse impact on our Film Industry. Phantom Films (Producer of Queen) have announced their dissolution on 5th October 2016 because of the allegation made on Vikas Behl (Director of Queen) by a former employee of Phantom Films supported by Kangana Ranaut and Nayani Dixit. On 12th October 2018, Director Sajid Khan stepped back from his upcoming film Housefull 4, because of the allegations from several women for his wrong sexual behavior. Music Composer – Singer Anu Malik was asked to step down from Judging T.V. reality show Indian Idol 10. There are more such cases which have negatively affected Bollywood.
All the Print Media and News channels are regularly following the Me Too movement. It is currently on the rage. We can’t say for how long it will be affecting Bollywood and as a whole to our Country. Even ordinary peoples are affected by this. Lastly, I can say that no one knows the number of allegation which is coming in the future and the persons who will be affected.
So stay tuned for regular updates.
